- This article is about the Release version of Squire. For the Alpha version of this unit, see Footman (Alpha).
The Squire is a melee unit from the Medieval faction. They are equipped with the Squire Sword. |
Characteristics[]
Squires are the main and common footman of the Medieval Faction. They are equipped with a longsword and will strike enemy units with it. Their light armor makes them a bit tougher than a Clubber. Cheap and having mediocre stats, they are a good basic unit. Even though outclassed by many units, they are strong in numbers, and are capable of dispatching groups of much weaker units like the Farmer and Peasant with ease.
Appearance[]
The Squire wears a flat-topped Great Helm from around the thirteenth century with some holes around it, a basic tabard, alongside plate greaves and couters, with brown shoes. It also wields a Longsword which is used for swinging at enemies.
The original squire, otherwise known as the Footman, in the alphas, wore a slightly darker grey great helm, with a yellow cross on it, interestingly, in the open alpha, they have eyes, in the closed alpha, they do not. This feature is shared with siege units in the pre-alpha, open alpha, and closed alpha.

Strategy[]
Usage[]
The Squire runs at a fast pace, and will most likely get to the enemy first. The Squire has an average HP count but can be killed by one Archer arrow. It has decent damage and will do best in groups.
They don't have the best range but combined with their speed and average health, they should be able to catch the enemy and kill them. Squires are somewhat good at combat, and in groups, as they can deal a lot of damage.
They are largely considered to be the most cost-effective basic infantry in the game (maybe with the exception of the Headbutter) due to balanced health, speed, cost, and damage. However, they are susceptible to being swarmed and can be taken out by Samurai, Fencer, or just about any unit easily.
Counter[]
Squires lack shields of any kind and are susceptible to all kind of ranged projectiles. While lightly armored, even Archers can kill them in 1 shot.
Weak but formidable in swarms, units with splash damage (eg. Bomb Thrower, Catapult, Longship) can easily deal with a squad of Squires. It is advised to have a lure in front to maximize crowd density and splash damage.
Historical Origins[]
In historical context, a Squire was a young nobleman acting as an attendant to a knight before becoming a knight themself. Squires were the second step to becoming a knight, after having served as a page (servant). They help the knight with important tasks such as taking care of horses, carrying the knight's weapons and armor and accompanying the knight in their journeys.
A knight typically took their squire into battle to give them a chance to prove themself, which wasn't something that happened everyday at that time. However, if they proved their loyalty and skill in battle, they would have a "dubbing", an official ceremony that made them a Knight. Otherwise, by the time they were 21, they would be dubbed a Knight officially.
Trivia[]
- It is possible to clip through the mask and see through the Squire's mask.
- Landfall often uses the Squires (without its sword) in showcase videos, and are highly abused by the trailers and players.
- In reality, Squires were attendants to knights and rarely fought in battles. Usually the knights would fight.
- They were the first unit to be introduced to the new animation system, where they could block, fall, and thrust.
- The developers have made several joke units by editing the Squire: the Protester and the Anime Swordsman.
- In the Pre-Alpha there were prone to making "conga lines" as when they spawned, they had their swords lowered, causing them to be caught in each other's blades.
- The Squire's and The Teacher's voices used to be the same, until the full release where The Teacher got its own voice.
- In the alpha, they were called footmen.
