- This article is about the Release version of Catapult. For the Alpha version of this unit, see Catapult (Alpha).
The Catapult is an artillery unit from the Medieval faction. They are equipped with Catapult Rocks. |
Characteristics[]
The Catapult is a crowd control artillery of the medieval faction. It attacks by hurling boulders at opponents. These cannot be blocked by any Projectile Shields and tend to crush lines of enemy Units. When out of range, the catapult will be pushed until it reaches its range. The Catapult breaks into pieces once destroyed, whether by melee or ranged.
Appearance[]
The Catapult is quite large and has a Wobbler in a simple coif cap along with a shirt and a pair of belt-held pants and shoes holding onto the bucket, which must pull back the boulder before firing. The Catapult can be found on multiple campaign levels in the Open/Closed Alpha. The rocks that the Catapult fires have a mini-explosion dealing tons of AOE damage. It has banners with a crown of the color that the Catapult is on the side. In the Wild West update, Landfall jokingly gave the Catapult eyes. It was reverted in the following update.
Unit Voice[]
Usage[]
Catapults are extremely useful against narrow and tightly packed formations and are best placed at a distance. They are also great for picking off remaining enemy units when all your melee units have died. Catapults fire in an arc, meaning you can safely place them directly behind a shorter ranged unit. Use this to your advantage. Its impact, even on troops with strong armor, is enormous. You will discover that its ranged attacks are formidable, turning these units into dangerous opponents.
When you're against Catapults, use many weak units and spread them out to minimize casualties. Despite their strong linear AOE, they can only target a single unit at a time, meaning you can easily overwhelm one by attacking from multiple sides. Plus, for some reason, the rock will very rarely not explode upon hitting the ground which severely reduces the amount of damage given to zero.
There is a strategy/messing around where you place a line of Catapults against the listed and the battle could go on for a very long time. In the full release the Catapult boulder will do AOE Damage when hitting the ground plus the usual linear AOE damage. There is a new dust animation and rocks hit each other they will stop each other.
Trivia[]
- The hands of the catapult's "operator" are glued to the bucket, and will flail with it when shooting.
- Torsion catapults did not see much use in the Middle Ages, as they were shortly replaced by the Trebuchet.
- Siege weaponry were typically not used in open battle in general as they are hard to calibrate and reload. They most saw action when sieging a castle or fortress to break down the wall or harass the wall garrison hence the name siege weapon.
- Catapults can destroy themselves if the unit they attack too close. This happens most frequently in the confined spaces of Ancient 1.
- In Early Access and Full Release, Catapults break in to multiple pieces upon death.
- The Catapult itself had eyes added to it like headlights in the Wild West update.
